What experiences have you all had in training your Apso? To be honest I have never really trained mine in any way at all but even still, they are pretty good when I give a command although I have to admit that when they want to be stubborn, they will be! But they are really good on the lead when we are out.

Raven was a dream to train. From 12 weeks old she was attending obedience training classes and if she doesn't make it as a show dog, she;'ll definitely make it as an obedience dog!

Wicket was also trained from 12 weeks. At first he was a little reluctant to walk, then got into the swing of it. He was perect at all of it and then when they started advising me to enter him in shows, hey presto, the stubborness of lhasas kicks in. He now doesn't walk when he's at training. Although he'll walk for recalls and he'll walk up to the ring. It's really frustrating. You walk him up to the ring perfectly. He sits like an angel at my left hand side and then when i tell him to heel, he just stays sitting. The folk at the training class think it's very funny. They know he can do it but he just doesn't want to. To get him walking we've tried:
- treats (but if there is no treat there is no walking)
- toys (sqeaking them an dthrowing them to see if he'll chase them and move)
- ignoring him
- pulling him
- changing direction to where ever he wants to go
- letting him lead but that invariably leads to me sitting in my seat becasue that is where he wants to be!

The thing is, he really enjoys going to the class and not walking. It's his idea of fun!

Well, Diesel never went outside til he was ten months old, so that was a trauma in itself...
It took me a whole day of lead on, give treat, lead off......lead on, walk two paces, give treat, lead off etc...and at about 9pm that night, me and Xiola walked him up the road and I felt like the first man on the moon!!! I was bursting with pride!!! :D
Anyway, 3 months later, me and Xiola decided training classes would be the way forward.......

So, at class number one, we sat and watched all the other dogs, and Diesel looked quite interested. Xiola was keen, so I suggested she did the training. MISTAKE NUMBER ONE.
At class number two, I felt very optimistic. MISTAKE NUMBER TWO.
So, I sat at the side and Xiola joined the circle of 6 others...."Walk clockwise please" said the trainer.....so 5 nice little doggys all did....and there, right in the middle, stood defiantly, was Diesel.
        (think of the "Psycho" theme at this point, for added effect)
His little skinny body squared up like a little white Oxo cube...ears suddenly developed points...like "Stripe" from The Gremlins......the top lip did a curl a bit like Elvis Presley....and I swear I heard him mutter "Not on your Nelly"
:o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o
By now, little Diesels paws had clearly ejected their very own supply of superglue, so his feet were stuck very firmly in that one place.
The top lip quivered a bit more to reveal a top set of little gnashers and he made a noise a bit like a passing motorbike.

"Just carry on walking" said the groomer to Xiola. "Please try" I willed silently.
MISTAKE NUMBER THREE.
Diesel, now realising WE thought WE could tell HIM what to do, decided to take fast and evasive action.
Checking over his shoulder for a fully captive audience, and quickly sizing up the fact that all the other dogs were clearly senseless to be doing as THEY were told...he went in for an Oscar winning performance of "I Am A Starfish" (I doubt you've heard of the film, he invented it at that very moment, you see)
So, with all his furry little might, young Diesel hit the floor. Legs, all four of them, spread out at right angles to his body, belly on the floor, and looking like he was trying to eat the floor at the same time. Still making the high-pitched-motorbike-engine-type noise.
The trainer, by this point obviously flustered at such a little furry dogs complete and utter defiance, proceeded to take the lead from Xiola to show he could do a better job.
MISTAKE NUMBERS FOUR FIVE AND SIX!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:o :o :o :o
Diesel decided now was the optimum time to put in the Grande Finale.....so, he did the "death roll" like crocodiles do...spinning around on the floor like the Tazmanian Devil itself...I swear he had red beams shooting from his eyes and horns growing under his ears......
At this point, I quickly realised that of he could wreak such havoc in the first five minutes of a class, he was not suited to classes.
I think at this point too the trainer had hoped that was what I was thinking...
I took Diesel, and sat him at the side, to watch the other dogs...who, incidentally all had their tails between their legs and were looking like they wished they never came.....
We were ever so polite at the end of the class...but I think he knew as well as both me and Diesel did, that he wouldnt be seeing us again..........

You wouldn't be alone. If there are any new folk to the class, they put wicket up in the first group so that they can see that their dog isn't the worst. Folk always end up laughing at him. Poor boy!

Nancy! He sounds like Wicket! It's just brilliant how they can stick to a polished surface!!!

The problem with lhasas is that they are way to smart to go to obedience classes (except Raven - she's quite dumb and so loves it). They've got an independent streak that kicks in. They'll do what you ask if they want to, but they won't do it just becuase you ask!
