The majority of people have heard the term “pneumonia” which is very often used,
and also know that it is a lung infection of some sort.

In fact, “pneumonia” is not a very good specific term and actually
may be defined as inflammation of tissue,
therefore meaning “lung inflammation of some sort.”

Pneumonia has been classified in various ways,
for example according to the area or tissue involved.

Pneumonia is an inflammation in deep lung tissues
where oxygen is absorbed into the body
and waste gases are removed.

The normal exchange of carbon dioxide for oxygen is impaired and impeded.
The lhasa apso has to struggle to obtain sufficient oxygen.

It has potential to be life-threatening
regardless of its cause.

In many cases there usually is a secondary infection at the root,
but not necessarily.

With less oxygen available to the red blood cells at the normal respiratory rate,
the Lhasa Apso needs to breathe faster.

The faster breathing rate (tachypnoea) is therfore a main symptom.

The Lhasa Apsos breathing may also become laboured and painful (dyspnoea)

The Lhasa Apso usually has a fever,
with accompanying dullness and loss of appetite.

There is often a cough,
though this is not an invariable or attention-catching symptom.

Pneumonia in dogs is caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites.
