What questions to ask

First question that you should ask before leaving your home
are both parents eye tested with current certificates viewable.
Please note that in dogs of eight years or over,
their certificates are valid for the remainder of the dogs life.

Are both parents Kennel Club Registered with certificates viewable.
In the case of an outside stud dog, a copy of the Kennel Club Green Litter Registration Form should be available to view with the Dogs Registration details on it, or at the very least a copy of his pedigree which shows his details.

Are both parents available to be viewed.
Again in the case of an outside stud dog, they could be anywhere in the country,
so at least a photograph of him and his pedigree should be available for viewing.

Will the puppies be Kennel Club Registered.
There is another registering body known as the dog lovers register. This is not an officially recognised body, as they even issue registration certificates for cross breeds.
Therefore any Dog Lovers Registered puppy can not be shown nor can any of its off spring be registered with the Kennel Club. Therefore this type of registration is not worth the paper it is written on.

Is the Kennel Club Registration Certificate available.
If not, then you must obtain written proof from the breeder, that such documentation will be forwarded on to your self, duly signed and in order. This legally binds the breeder in a court of law to provide said documents.

Most reputable breeders will place restricted endorsements upon the puppies Kennel Club Registration Certificate. Which should be explained to you by the breeder at the time of purchase. If not please see under our Kennel Club section regarding endorsements.

Please make it clear to the breeder, prior to or at the time of purchase, what it is that you want, i.e. a pet companion, possibly showing or breeding. In the case of show / breeding puppies, you may find that you go on to a waiting list as the best breeders stock is usally in high demand.

Please also note that it is quite possible that the breeder may
refuse to allow you to have one of these puppies,
as they do not allow there stock to be sold for such reasons.

If in the case of showing or breeding, please take an experience and knowledgable lhasa apso person with you, to help and assist.

Are the puppies wormed.
Are the records / certificates available

Will I receive a Sales Receipt

Is there a Sales Contract which I have to sign,
and will a copy be retainable.

Will the puppy be vaccinated.

Will the puppy be microchipped.

In any case no puppy should be allowed to leave before it is eight weeks of age,
ideally ten weeks by which time it should have completed a vaccination course.

Will the price of vaccinations and microchipping be included in the purchase price
or will I have to pay extra for this.

What food was the puppy reared on
What food is the puppy currently eating.

What feeding regime does the breeder operate,
i.e. time set meals or do they free range feed.
Of which food should be available at all times, along with clean fresh water.

In the case of time set meals,
you may find this to be a bind,
as you have to be available to feed at set times.

The lhasa apso has been known to be a clock watcher,
and if meals are not forth coming at set times,
this can cause them undue stress,
this can also lead to them being vocal, developing bad habits,
like barking or singing for their supper.

Has the puppy received any form of crate training
or used to being kept in a safe area,
such as a Puppy Pen.

Has the puppy shown any signs of illness or received any form of veterinary treatment,
if so are these records available.

Will the puppy be insured.

Will the puppy have received any form of table training. i.e. standing on table or any raised surface area, to be groomed, examined, nails trimmed etc.

Can you look in the puppies mouth without a fight, the same with feet.

Please note that Lhasa Apso's do tend to have particularly ticklish feet.

Will the puppy have Dew claws or have they been removed
(Ideally they should be removed within the first five days of life)

Has the puppy received any form of Paper training

Also please be prepared to answer any questions that the breeder may have for you.

If need be, please feel free to print this list to take with you.
