So that those of you who are anticipating a first litter,
will have some guidelines for observation.
0 -1 WEEK
Activated Sleep, much twitching, jerking etc.
Pup drags itself to teat and warmth.
Ears are straight up.
Tail is down except when feeding
Coat texture apparent
Pigment begins to fill in
1-2 WEEKS
Weight double 7 - 10 days
Ears begin to unplug
Eyes begin open with small slits in corners
Definite crawling motions
Sleep still activate, twitching, jerking etc. as dreaming
2-3 WEEKS (Busy Time)
Eyes are open, with blue film and smoky appearance
Ears are open and begin to droop
Rapid weight gain amongst largest pups in litter
Differences in coat colour are visable, when the coat is brushed or blown the wrong way
Sleep becomes more steady and calm
There are no definite periods of sleep and wakefulness
Walking starts and tail comes up more
Start growling
Squeaks of surprise when picked up suddenly and now whining
3-4 WEEKS
Responding to sounds, i.e. calling, Light & Food
Play and interaction with litter mates begins
Tail wagging
Scratching
Stalking
Pouncing
Play
Killing Toys i.e. Shaking from side to side
More awareness of surroundings
Definite explorations being
Tail up all the time and used as rudder to assist with walking
Body size and structure become apparent
4 WEEKS
Upper canine teeth become apparent under the gums
Play attack with litter mates
Growling and Tussling
Locates sound
Tracks and follows slow movement with eyes
5 WEEKS
Aggressive displays and attacks between litter mates
Lower canine teeth become apparent under gums
6 WEEKS
All canine teeth through gums and needle sharp
Dam decides to wean the pups
7 WEEKS
Pups select definite toilet area in litter puppy pen
They beg for freedom
They display fear and / or startle reaction to loud noises
8 WEEKS
Definite hours of play, rest, sleep etc.
All pups in litter now have teeth
Fastidious with toilet area
Avoidance when dirty, otherwise always used
Hunger brings anger
Hostility with each other increases
Lead training can be started now, Some resistance, but pretty enjoyable to most.
9-10 WEEKS
Movement becomes more fluid and graceful, first displayed by dogs with more refined bone.
Freedom revelled in running, racing, playing games in open areas.
Still enjoy being on their backs
11 WEEKS
Rivalries appear, particular amongst bitch puppies
"ganging" starts
Puppy's search for news papers on floor
12 WEEKS
Rivalries between siblings very strong
Ganging quite dramatic and intense
By now should have completed vaccination course & be on their way to new homes
