View Full Version : Long Coated v Short Coated
Do you prefer to keep your Lhasa's in full coat or do you prefer them clipped.
What do you find the pro's and con's of either to be.!!
Personally,
I love to see the Lhasa Apso in its full crowning glory.
However for practical purposes, and in certain situations,
I find it necessary to have to clip,
those of my apso's that are not in the ring.
For example:-
Any of my girls that are due to whelp.
My older retired lhasa apsos.

I like to keep Benji with his full coat but he's been clipped once a year. I thought this would keep him cooler but apparently it doesn't make much difference due his double coat. Now that I know this, I won't be getting him clipped 'puppy cut' next year.
He looks at his best when it's becoming almost a nightmare to bath and blowdry him so from now on he'll just be getting little trims at home to keep him tidy and looking as gorgeous as he does here...

Cocos still too young yet for a trim... apart from her toes and bottom of course ;-) but she'll be keeping her full coat too. I won't be letting either of them have hair to the floor all over because I like to see that they've got legs.
The 'puppy cut' can look nice if it's done right plus it's a lot easier to manage and keep clean.

I loved Maggie in full coat, I never ever clipped her before.
And if I ever ever have a lhasa or any long coated breed again I would not clip them unless it was for medical or health issues.
If I wanted a short coat dog I would get a short coated dog.

Well said Jess, I keep Hector sort of half way house, trimmed face and legs but still quite long. Maisie full coat, I cut just face and feet and the two pups will be in full coat as I intend to show them.
I groom them as much as I can and I have mat free dogs! I love their long coats!
I love to see lhasa'a in their full coat but where I live in Durban, South Africa it gets extremely hot and humid in the summer months which are coming up.Any advise on whether my lhasa will be able to handle the heat in full coat?Would appreciate any thoughts.

Hi Sue, welcome to the forum :-P
I used to live in Durban too, on the Bluff, left there back in 1984 and now live in South Wales. I remember the people living in the house behind ours had two little hairy dogs, a pair of poms, they never had them clipped so your lhasa should be fine :-)
