With little Coco coming up for her first season soonish, I'm just a little worried that it may start before Benji gets his op on 10th Sept. Keeping them apart at night isn't an issue but they play together during the day and I don't know how long it takes for the deed to be done :?
The other thing I'm a little worried about is having other dogs in the area catching a whiff of it and hanging around the house. Is it best to keep Coco confined to the house and garden until it's completely over ?

You will have to keep them apart all the time she is in season to be sure their is no tie. Obviously she will only be fertile for a few days but due to this being her first season and your inexperience this may be hard to determine. A mating can last seconds, minutes or in extreme cases hours so keeping an eye on them isn't really an option. Also a dog can get himself in quite a state and you will get no peace. Maisie had her first season before Hector had been neutered and I thought I had it covered. I am fortunate enough to have the space to keep them separate with separate access to the garden, although they would be in the same house. This worked for the first week after that it was terrible, Hector knew Maisie was in another part of the house and he got himself in such a state I had to ask me friend to have him for a couple of weeks.
By the time of her next season he had been 'done' so that was ok and so was the next. On her next season she was mated and that was ok. Boy oh boy though did I have a surprise when she came in season after having the pups!!!
The first week or so was ok but then, when Maisie hit her fertile days it was madness! Even though Hector was not interested, she was! She flirted and mounted and poor Hector, who couldn't do the deed still got in a state because of her behavior and so did she! She was such a hussie!
In the end poor Hector again had to go, this time to my sons, just to get some peace!
So even if he is neutered you may have to keep them apart.
If she comes in season before the op or even just after as I said the deed can take only seconds!
You will have to keep her at home too, to be fair to other dog owners.

Hiya, Maisie was five months, I'm still waiting for little Belle, she is now almost six months
Females coming into season will each have their own cycle.
Even though there is a guide line,
not all females run like text books.
I would have to say that the majority of my girls come into season every six months.
Sometimes, when one girl is in season,
that can bring another into season as well.
I don't think I have ever had a girl come in before nearly six months.
I have had the experience of split seasons.
This I will cover in another thread.

It has now arrived and she is just six months old. Maisie was five months old so I guess she is following in her mums footsteps!

I've decided to wait until I get some real information on Benji's heart condition before putting him through an operation.
Coco is 6 months old now too but still no sign and I'm checking her every day lol poor thing doesnt' know whats going on.
Need to make sure I get them organized before any mishaps can take place. Luckily I too can separate them in the house but if it gets too hard then Dave will have to take one of them to his house.

7 months now and still no sign of anything. I'm still checking... bless her, she must be thinking that this is the norm by now, I've been doing it for the last month and half. I'm sure she's gonna come to me one day and just do a handstand in front of me.
Is there any chance that I could have missed it, do they always have signs ?
