I was advised that pilchards were a great thing to give your lhasas if they were off their food a bit, and i was told that sardines and mackrel etc. was good for thier coats. I buy the tinned fish from the supermarket but there is often bones in the fish (even the ones that claim to be filleted). Are fish bones bad for your dog or can they eat them becuase they haven't been cooked?

I bought a tin of pilchards after they were recommended by Raven's breeder but they were full of bones so I just through the whole tin in the bin, but this got me thinking about the bones. My sister feeds her rotty sardines, bones and all, but he's a big dog. I though that the bones might stick in a lhasa's throat and I didn't want to risk it. Are uncooked fish bones ok?

Personally I would'nt feed my three fish bones because these are fine and sharp, cooked or uncooked.

When I open a tin of oily fish of any type, I go through it on a plate and remove any I can find but I really do sift through it - its tedious and takes time but I do it. Now a tin of salmon that has the 'round' bones are very soft - even I eat these - and these just crunch up but I still remove them for the pooches. Oily fish is excellent for them. I only give this once a week though xxxxxxxxxx

so you don't worry about the bones then? it's such a shame for my two coz i open the tin, they smell the fish and get excited, I see that there is too many bones and then they watch me put it in the bin!! i'll try mashing it up and see what happens. cheers!
