Lulu going to the groomers tomorrow...( my eldest's friends Mum a groomer some distance away), am thinking.... Daisy always was in "pet clip" ., Lulu last year in the heat was still a small pup, but now got quite a coat.. despite the mishap in about may/ april.. (when the groomer took her quite short). But am worrying as it soo hot should i have Lulu in pet clip for her?? How do your dogs cope in the heat with a full coat? As i am never going to show her should i have her short in the summer? I know it suits her long, and i like the look.,Daisy was so beautifull suited her short... but am wondering which is the kindest thing in this heat??? As i said i am never going to show her, so what to do?? just wondering I know by tomorrow i will have made my decision then anyway.. but for anyone about tonight please your advise i would welcome.xx

Hi Yvonne,
Well Diesel went to the groomers on Wednesday, and as you can see in the photos I have just posted (My Day In Pictures post) I have kept him longer...he had his "delicate area" shaved, trimmed around his bottom, and the pads of his feet. So, he is longer coated but not reeeeeeeally long.
I find frozen bottles of water really help...I keep my old 4-pint plastic milk bottles, half fill with water, and freeze overnight...then the next day I put them on the floor where he likes to lay, and he can lay against them and keep cool. I put one in the rabbit hutch to keep her cool too xxx

Not sure if you will check the posts Yvonne before you take Lulu to the groomers but when the coat is longer, not only does it protect from harsh weather, it also protects in the sun. It prevents the sun from burning the skin and if you apply a sunscreen down the centre of Lulu's spine, tips of her ears and her bottom (yes this can burn) then she will be fine and as long as there is somewhere for her to lay in the shade with copious amounts of fresh cold water, she will be ok.

All my three as you know manage fine in the heat. I also have a fan on standby should the house become too warm for them.

The shorter the coat the more susceptible she will be to sunburn and heatstroke as the rays will penetrate much more and much quicker - the longer coat acts like a barrier. See thread in Health & Fitness re Heatstroke.

Hope all goes well and hope this helps xxxxxxxxxxxxx

First of all you have to make a decision
do you want Lulu long coated or shorter.

Depending upon your decision,
depends on your course of action.

If you wish to keep Lulu long coat,
then I would have her tummy panel shaved
from the third pair of teats,
(which normal is on the rib cage)

Remove an oblong panel right the way down to her vulva.

This will allow her to lay directly on to cold flooring,
i.e. tiles, concrete, laminate etc.

If the weather is to hot then you can lay down a wet towel,
which she can also lay on.

If you want to have her in a teddy clip,
then your groomers,
will clip her to the necessary shape and length.

The lhasa has a double coat.
An under coat and top coat.

The under coat acts as a coolant and also as a insulation.

The choice is really yours,
you will make the choice that suits you.

Lhasa's know when they are getting over heated,
and react in such a way,
that they put themselves in the shade.

Either under a bush, tree, car, table
or take themselves in doors.

As long as you have plenty of cool water available and shaded area's
Lulu will be fine.

You can actually get blocks that you put in the water bowl,
which keeps the water cool.

Let us know which avenue you have chosen to go down
either way I am sure Lulu will look lovely

As you'll see from my latest pics I took the decision to have Maggie cut short although I didn't expect it to be as short!! I think the groomers had to cut it short as I had had enough and got the scissors out and filled 3 carrier bags of fluff! I am lucky I have found a groomer who specializes in Lhasa and shitz
If you decide to have a short cut always remember it will grow back!!!

I am lucky she automatically goes under the trees or inside she hates the sun!
