Lia
Sandy is doing good. She has gotten large the size of your hand. She had taken to sleeping under her cage liner. I put her sleeping sack back in the cage and I've noticed that last couple of days that she is sleeping inside the sack. I like this much better.
We also got her some mealie worms, she loves them so I let her have them every couple of days.
I will have to try to get some pictures of her. I'm not very good at remembering to take pictures of anything.
I've had her out of the cage a few times sense Nathan has been gone, the dogs like to she what she is until that is she huffs at them and her quills puff out.
She had the neatest face when she goes to uncurl from her ball.

I hope you can remember to take some - I remember the first time you showed her to us all - she was tiny!!! And so cute! Ive always liked Hedgehogs and I think Ive said before that I would stop and remove one from the road to safety if I had to do.
I was going to ask what you fed her but you have answered the question already. Are these live worms or dead ones? Please don't tell me you pick them up with your bare hands!!!:-o:shock: The thought makes me shudder!
I'd love to witness the pooches go near her when she 'huffs' at them - how funny would this be xxxxxxxxxxxx

Sandy's normal diet is a mix I get from a hedgehog breeder, but she get mealies as a treat. I would love to find them live but we have only the hedgehog so not cost effective. I buy them fried dried in a can, I do put them up with my fingers and give her a few in the cage and put the can in fridge for later. The first can we left out and they spoiled, but we asked what to do with the can once opened this time. She just loves the mealies.
She is still very cute, she has white/cinnamon quills, the quills have 2 colors so she looks speckeled. the both half is white and soft.
The dogs will only jump back a bit when she puffs out. Noggy keeps comming back for more. She can be such a funny puppy.
I will try to get pictures of Noggy and Sandy.
Noggy got a hair cut and is more dark now (Mud/red/brown).

You would love to find them live ???!!!!!! Oh my goodness Bridget!!!! I am really feeling squeamish at the thought! I would even need a scoop for the dried ones
She sounds a lovely colour and the white & cinnemon sounds lovely together as a contrast. So does she hibernate for months just like everyday hedgehogs then? This may sound a silly question but I remember you called her 'something' and was she african??? So I was wondering if for any reason her hibernation period differed at all.
Noggy's colour sounds lovely too and is it unusual to go darker rather than the going lighter? xxxxxxxxx

No Sandy will not hibernate, this is a bad thing. Yes I would like to see Sandy try to catch the mealies. Some people let mealies turn to beetles and then put the beetles in for the hedge's gives them something different to do. No scope need the dried mealies are like small pretzells or chinese noodles..not sure if these give the right picture.
As far as NOggy goes, looks like she carries the gray gene like Libby only Libby is going smoke-gray and Noggy(red) is turning Dark Mud. Very pretty all the same almost a mahagony color. Have to get a picture. She is a site with her short cute, left her head and tail long the rest is real short. But she loves her new do.
Is it really bad for Sandy not to hibernate Bridget? I wonder if a vet knows how to 'promote' hibernation - if at all.
And as for Mealies turning into beetles - omg even worse for me :-o
The colours of Noggy and Libby sound fabulous - I love the Slate Grey shade and I also love Mahogony. xxxxxxxxxxx

Not sure why it is bad for them to hibernate, just know we have to keep her room at 75F or higher. This means the space heater has been on and off most of the summer as it has not been very hot here.
I guess I'm just weird about the bettles, think it would be neat to see her eat them. She just loves the mealies.
Yes I have to say the Libby and NOggy have great colors. Will try to get new pictures soon. Libby is still with INdy, but Hobo is not going nuts so Libby must be in the right time now.
Well I certainly would not want to witness anything eating beetles, thats for sure :-o xxxx

Now where is your adventous side? It part of nature. It will break up her normal day and give her something different to do. But then I guess I'm just weird.

Hey Bridget, you have to get some pictures, I'm dying to see your hedgehog. I buy live mealworms all the time at a local pet store. I feed them to my turtles as a treat also. They come in a plastic round container in a sawdust or something like it with holes for air on the top. We can also buy live crickets, but I don't need them anymore. I used to get them for a plated lizard we had.
Lia, you get immune to these things after a while. The gross stuff I have had to feed these exotics over the years, I couldn't tell you. The worst was feeding live rats to our snake. I would put the snake cage outside to feed it. I could not look at the rat, if I did I would never have been able to drop it in the cage. Needless to say we had a few rats as pets over the years.

Oh Anj, I could never touch a rat let alone feed one to a snake :-o I don't mind Voles as I think they are rather cute and also because they don't have a long tail...............it's the tail thing with me!!! xx

I always thought a rats tail would be bald and maybe scaly but it's not. Their tails are actually covered in clear hair. I fell in love with my two rats on sight and it wasn't until i was handling them for the first time that i realised this. Although it's quite freaky how they hold on with their tails. If they are on my hand they wrap their tails round my wrist for balance and support.
I would just need to think of it as animal nature if I had to feed live animals to one of my pets. To the snakes, a rat is a nice tasty treat! It's just like us eating quails .... (I think they are they cutest wee birds on the planet!).
