Raven went into the vets this morning. I'm beside myself with worry. It's the same everytime any of my animals goes in. They usually phone about half 1 to let me know how she got on so I'll let you all know as soon as I hear.

Well, I nearly s**t myself there! The vet phoned. Raven is under the anaesthitic but they had to phone me. I was instantly panicing! But it's ok. She has a retained baby tooth that they need permission to take out. That's what's been causing the tartar build up. I was so worried when they phoned. I could feel my heart racing! They never phone this early so I knew she wasn't finished! Oh .. i need 5 mins to recover from the scare.

Has anyone had baby teeth removed from their dogs? Will she have a slit gum or anything? Or swelling?

She should be fine. She might just be having a time coming out of the anestica.

She might be just a little groggy from the anaesthetic they wouldn't have had to shave her face but did you tell them not to shave her leg???? sometimes unless you say they do shave the leg where they put the drip in. I had sa beardie have 2 baby teeth removed as they wouldn't come out and was knocking the allignment of the 2 adult teeth out as they were trying to come in

the olk at the vets know not to shave her leg. they did it once when she was a pup (after i told them not to) and i nearly went through them! i remind them everytime about that and all they say is that they can't promise that they won't shave it but they'll try not to.
i didn't notice the baby tooth (or teeth) so it's proabbly ruined raven's mouth knowing my luck!

Im sure all will be ok Kim with Raven. I know why you don't want her leg shaving though - spoils it a bit for showing does'nt it. If so, it will grow back - eventually. Im just wondering what they mean about 'not looking too good' ?? xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Well, I've got raven home. She's not at her best. Thankfully they didn't shave her but she's a right mess. They must've hit a good old vein when they took blood for her blood test as her front paw is covered in thick congealed (sp?) blood. There really is rather a lot of it for a dog her size (and i mean all her foot and almost everything from her elbow down is covered). I'm a bit concerned so i'll keep a close eye on her. Her gum looks really sore where the tooth came out too and she is major league groggy.
She's had general anaesthetics before but she's never looked this bad picking her up. She can't even walk in a straight line, she's doing a kind of sideways shuffle. She obviously starving as she nicked some of wick's food as soon as she got in but i'm not sure what to give her because of her sore gum.
She certainly wasn't a pretty sight and all her head was soaking wet (I don't know why) but now I've got her home I'm happier. She's currently crashed out on the rug in the living room. I think i'll let her sleep there for a while. Usually I'd pick her up and put her into her bed but I don't want to disturb her.

Sorry not sure what to say. Glad you have her home and she will come out of it soon. I would let her eat what she wants, maybe sofen up her regular food. Sleep is good for her now. Did they give you anything for pain? I might call and she what you can give her just to take the edge off for tonight.

They didn't give me anything for her but I'll give them a phone to see what they say. She's having a wee cry every time she realises I've left her side (even though she was asleep) so I'm going to go back and sit beside her for a while. I'll give you all an update later on.

Oh Kim...this sounds just like Diesel.
He doesnt do anaesthetic well at all.
When he went in to have his wotsits off, they found a retained baby tooth that had an adult tooth growing at the side so it was hard to spot.
When he came home he walked everywhere diagonally cos his front legs were going one way and his back legs another way...and he kept crying for a good 24 hours...he really is bad when he gets put under.
I hope the poor little mite feels better soon. My heart is absolutely going out to her - I can absolutely picture how she is right now.
Please give her an extra cuddle from auntie Nancy xxxxxx

Crikey Kim, Raven sounds as though its the worst she has been under anaesthetic! I am very surprised about the congealed blood that is on her - why did they not clean her up? My vet always cleans up. Her head is probably wet because they always use some sort of anti-infection liquid that they swab them with to prevent onset of any bacteria/infection - this was more than likely done due to the removal of the tooth so they will swab quite a big area there. Thing is, when the anaesthetic starts to wear off, she will feel any pain even more and Im amazed that they have not given you anything to administer to Raven to help the pain!!! You can safely give her human paracetamol - did you know this? I would crush half a tablet and under the circumstances, I would not force anything down her throat this way. Try putting the crushed half tablet in a treat. The most important thing is make sure she has her water even if you have to syringe it into her mouth.
I would definitely ring the vet and ask more questions without a doubt to settle your mind.
I hope you don't mind my saying this Kim, but if you are not 100% happy, definitely consider changing vets. I certainly would not have Raven under any further anaesthetic for a long while now unless it was absolutely vital.
I will be thinking of her Kim xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
PS Did you know that a local anaesthetic could have been given love xx

Could you please tell me if Ravens retained baby tooth
was a retained fang
or
retained back tooth.
i.e canine tooth is front fang
rear tooth is a molar.

The problem with blood
is that a little goes a long way!!
They may have taken out the cannula
without applying pressure.
Obviously this will bleed until the blood clots.
Hence the amount.
When you take your apso to the vets to be sedated,
each time,
they generally give a little more of the sedative.
So this time Raven could have had a little to much,
hence it taking longer for her to come round.
There is nothing to worry about,
it merely means that it will take a little longer
for it to come out of her system.
The reason her head would be soaking wet
is down to two factors.
One being that a Dental sonic would have been used to clean, scale and polish her teeth.
The dental sonic sprays water as the equipment is operated.
So obviously some of this water has covered her coat.
Second being that although Raven was sedated her saliva glands carry on working.
So where she was being turned over or from side to side,
the saliva would be still coming out of her mouth on to her coat.
Hence her face being wet or slimy with saliva.
What Raven needs most of all is to sleep the medication off.
Like us Humans,
even when we have just woken up from an operation,
all we want to do is sleep.
Resting is the best thing.

Very wise words there hun...
Diesel took a good night's sleep and a VERY quiet day the next day to recover. I had the house really quiet...no TV or radio...and put his blanket on the sofa. I would say it was 24 hours though until he was looking and acting more like himself though xx

Well, I can't see where the took the tooth from but the vet said it was an upper left canine. Is that a fang?
My vet never cleans up their paws etc when there is blood on them. They leave it for the owner so that they don't stress the dog out too much. Raven has cleaned a lot of it herself but when she gets a bath this weekend she'll go through the roof proabably!
Lia, no I didn't know she could get it under a local. And as for changing vet, the other vet in this area is terrible .. and i mean terrible. I trust the vet I use completely and so do the dogs for things where they don't get put to sleep (although sometimes i think they see me a blank cheque) but I just don't trust them when i leave my girl there alone. I might see if there is another vet within about 10 miles. Unfortunately my vet is a chain and it's the same vets that work in the 4 local towns (plus the other vet who works independently).
Thank you all for your kind words. I spent most of last night just sitting downstairs with her. She was getting back to her old self by bed time and was only giving an occasional yelp, but i think that was her paw more than her tooth.
Oh, and I phoned my vet and they said not to give her any pain killers as they gave her something (can't remember what) before she left the vets.

Hi Kim
I do hope Raven is back to her old self now and without too much stress.
Going back to Kerry's post, I never thought about the dental sonic spray.
I cannot understand your vet saying that they 'dont clean up as it would cause more stress'..............they could have done this before Raven started to 'come round' as she would never have known or felt anything anyway. I understand what you are saying about your vets to be honest but if you can, do try to find a vet that you can trust to leave Raven there without you being present. My vets are 20 miles away and this is because I trust them with my three and I know they are in safe hands. Its a long way I know and it wont be much good if I have a problem with Lexi but legally, I can ring ANY vet if needed and they cannot refuse to tend to Lexi if needed so Im not particularly worried about this.
Anyway at least you know that they administered some type of pain killer but again, Im surprised that you were not told this at the time of collecting Raven...........again, my vets explain everything before I leave so that I dont have to do what you did and that was telephone to find out.
But the main and most important thing is that Raven is ok and is back to her old self. xxxxxxxxxxxxx

She back to her old self and is now more full of beans than ever! She ate all of her food and wicket's food yesterday so her apitite is back. She's a wee ganet! i'm glad she's over it and now her teeth are sparkly clean. I bought plaque off (can't remember if i posted that anywhere) so hopefully she'll not need to go through it again.

Boy I can't believe I missed all this. I have several years experience doing dentals on passed out pooches like Raven. I could have told you not to worry, it is a common reaction and Raven would be back to normal in no time. Many vets will keep a dog who had been under anesthesia overnight because the groggyness and slobber freak people out. And the vet's never explain how it's really going to be when you get home with your groggy doggy. Too late for telling you all this, it's over and Raven is back to normal. I'm glad!!! I must confess though when it is my own dog going under anesthesia and having to watch the side affects when they get home freaks me out too. I can deal with someone elses dog, but when it's your own, it's a whole different ballgame.
This is absolutely true Anj! Im ok too with other pooches but when its one of mine..........I fall to pieces!!! xxxxx

Great news,
glad to hear that she is back on top of the world
I think that you will be impressed with plaque off.
You obviously will not notice any change in the next couple of weeks,
as she has had her teeth cleaned etc.
Use as directed and her teeth should stay this way.
Hopefully now, no more worries for you and Raven,
just happy smiling, bright white teethy pegs.
Yes and Im definitely going to buy some of this myself xx

Great to hear that Raven is back to her old self!! Huggs from Lydia and Coco!!
Like Anj said, many vets prefer to keep dogs overnight after they had come out from anaesthesia. I didn't know this either until recently when I had to deal with my own Coco looking so vulnerable, weak, groggy and just helpless after her spay operation. It just broke my heart looking at her. When I told my vet on a subsequent visit, he said that's how the dogs usually behave after they wake up from anaesthesia, but then owners want their dogs home as soon as possible, so he sometimes doesn't even mention that the dogs should stay there overnight as he knows the owners would protest.... I wish I had known too... but then again I also wanted Coco home and next to me as soon as possible.
I have been using PlaqueOff on Coco for a year now and I can vouch for its effectiveness. Coco is 9. When I took over caring of her, she was already 8 and had never gone for any dental scaling whatsoever. When I got a groomer to teach me how to brush Coco's teeth, the groomer told me that I could forget about brushing her teeth because they were so bad nothing much could be done. Moreover, there was the awful breath from her mouth. Thank goodness, I didn't listen to her. With my combined use of PlaqueOff and the Vibrac Poultry-Flavor toothpaste on her, Coco now no longer has bad breath and her teeth look fine, except for tartar that needs to be scraped off. Today my vet said that Coco's teeth look very good for her age and asked what we had been feeding her :)

Yes that very same groomer!! By the way, Coco was doing her "butt dance" for the last couple of days, so I asked the vet to empty her anal glands when I went there yesterday. To my surprise, there was a lot of discharge. The vet even joked that he ought to scold me for not emptying her anal glands in a long while. But then I had the home groomer come by less than 6 weeks ago, and I saw her squeezing Coco's glands. Then the vet said Coco's are located deeper and that not all dogs are the same ... Hmm now I'm having second thoughts about using that groomer's services. I use her mainly for that purpose since I can bathe and blow dry Coco myself even though I take much longer than she does!!
Anyway, Plaque off is great!!
Lydia, you may as well do Coco's anal glands yourself :-D..........it's not that bad really and if you use gloves, you will be fine. I now do everything myself and it's great. I would'nt dream of using a groomer anymore -it would have to be a complete emergency first xxxxxxxxx
