My little girl is going into the vets next tuesday for a scale and polish of her teeth. She gets her teeth brushed regularly and gets loads of dental chews but her back teeth have a tartar build up. I don't know how! Her front teeth are really clean but her back ones need cleaned :( Must be the way she chews or something!

We should start a poll on how much you think it's going to cost me .... I'm guessing £100+. (My vets are highway robbers in disguise!)

Oh, I wonder how she got such a build up? Poor thing...sounds like its out of your control though hun. And maybe better they have caught it now before it becomes gum disease or teeth removal? I wouldnt know how much it will cost...anaesthetic is about £50 alone isnt it?x

When Ive had mine done, they are awake and the vet uses the 'scraping gadget' (not sure of its proper name) but on saying this, its only a bit at the back that ever need to be removed anyway. xx

That's all Raven's needs but knowing my vet, it'll be under a general coz they can squeeze more money out of me that way!

I'll ask but I'm not sure if I'll get. My vet tends to be really cautious about things. I'll let you know on tuesday though!

With the different products that available for the build up of tartar etc,
you really should avoid taking your apso
to the vets for this type of procedure.

As every time you apso put under anesthetic you are running a risk.

There are food additives which within a couple of weeks show remarkable results.

There are hand tools available that you can use as well.

If you carried out a regular routine,
with the hygiene of your apso's mouth,
you would not need to put your apso through
this unnecessary procedure, and unnecessary anesthetic.

This is one of the reasons why I do not want any of my three put under an anaesthetic. Kerry, which cleaner would you recommend? Or are there a few good products that do work. Pamela uses a particular brand and says that its really good x

I honesty don't know how it has happened. She's only just turned 1! She gets dentastix and dentarasks one a week (as treats ), she gets her teeth brushed *almost* everyday and every single night without fail they get a Logic dental chew when they go to bed at night after their last meals. It's only her very back teeth that have any build up. Hopefully they can do it without an anesthetic.

My three have never really entertained dentastix or the rasks - I'd have thought they would have loved them but no, they never really did x

Oh dear... I never cleaned Daisy's teeth and i don't Lulu's either, i always give mine bones though, obv. not chicken, or slowly baked one's which would splinter, Daisy's were as my vet said a bit "manky" but she was 12 1/2 at the time....Lulu's look ok though and she's now 18 months., I too would worry bout anesthestic though, not trying to scare you, but wouldn't have anesthestic unless apsolutely nessessary., is there no other alternative, that has been mentioned that you could use??., As anesthesthia is an operation in itself.xx

I'll speak to the vet when I go. This'll be the 3rd or 4th time Raven has been under anesthetic already. As I said, my vet likes to do most things that way.

Well there are a couple of good ones,
that do work.

Plaqueoff
Used daily, PlaqueOff can significantly help in the control of dental plaque, tarter and bad breath

Completely natural product containing a special type of seaweed (D1070)

Thought to affect the ability of plaque to stick to surfaces in the mouth and softens hard tartar deposits

Rich in natural iodine, contains important vitamins and minerals

Free from artificial colours, preservatives, gluten and sugar

Add small amounts of granules to food every day

For small dogs and cats a 60g pot will last up to a year, and for large dogs 3 months

I have seen improvements within 21 days.

Spray DENTIDOG 50 ml

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/Keris01/dentidog.jpg

Eliminate the odors d' organic origin.
Support l' elimination of the tartar.
Neutralize the bad breath.
The dental plaque prevents.

This spray helps protect teeth of the plaque without having to brush their teeth.
The active ingredients remove dental plaque and prevent the formation of tartar.
This oral spray is particularly suited to sensitive dogs.
The use of this spray can have healthy teeth and fresh breath

I have seen brilliant results with this as well.

I used this long before plaqueoff came on the shelf.

I still use it to this day.

The other must in your grooming kit is
Double Ended Teeth Descaler.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/Keris01/double-ended-teeth-descaler.jpg

You need to check your apso's teeth every week.
Paying attention to any areas where tartar is building up,
also checking gums.

I have never taken any of my apso's
to my vets for their teeth to be descaled and cleaned.
As I have not had the need to.

Thanks Kerry...........I think I will try the both of these and see which one I get on with the best........................Honey is going to be the hardest in so far as the spray  xx

Thanks Kerry! I'm also thinking of doing this.

Coco needs a dental scaling but I want to see how much I can do to improve her teeth before my vet does this. As she made a wonderful recovery from the spay surgery just 2 weeks ago, my vet believes Coco can have dental scaling done under anaesthesia in say 2-3 months' time. He tells me that dental scaling will need just 10 minutes of anaesthesia, compared to like half an hour for spaying. Coco has never had her teeth taken care of all her life, so I've been brushing her teeth for the past 1 year ever since I got attached to her. Brushing her teeth has taken away her bad breath most significantly, but I can still see the plaque on her teeth and the infected gums :(

Kim, can you please share your experience after Raven is back from the dental appointment? I would like to know especially how long Raven takes to return to normal both physically and behavior-wise after waking up from the anaesthesia given for the dental scaling.

Is there anywhere online I can order the Double-ended Teeth Descaler, and they'll deliver to Singapore? I sure hope so...

Is it not possible for you to be able to purchase a descaler directly from your vet Lydia? This would be far easier for you. I know that I can virtually purchase anything I need from my vet albeit a little more expensive than from the internet. xxxx

I will do! She went in this morning for her general anaesthetic (sp?) and as soon as I hear anything I'll post it. I've started a thread in world news about it. I'm beside myself with worry!

I bought some plaque off at the vets today. I'll see if that helps raven anymore ... but the baby tooth being removed will help a lot apparantly. It's something to do with the bacteria hiding between the baby tooth and the adult tooth.

Hey I bought some plaque off at Leeds Ch Show today and when I was at the stall, I could hear loads of ppl praising it and saying that its the best thing invented for their dogs teeth!!! So Ive just tried it with my three and hid it in some pate..............Lexi and Bruce no hassle, Honey - NO!!!!! Then I tried soft cheese with her.............NO!!!! She can smell the seaweed and refuses point blank to have it!!!!!! Any suggestions? xxxxxxxxx

What I would suggest is that you try giving it to honey with something that smells.

Try mixing it in a smale of amount of pata.

Make a tiny pea shape ball and give Honey that first,
once she has eaten that then give her a second ball with the plaqueoff in.

You could even try sprinkling garlic salt or powder over it.

Any thing that they like,
but that is stronger in smell than the plaqueoff.

Another tip would be to give Lexi and Bruce a small pea size amount first,
so that Honey sees them eating and will be intrigued herself.

Let us know if this works
