Lhasa Apsos housetrain the fastest if they are put on a regular schedule and kept in a pen or a crate when unsupervised. By eight weeks old, breeders should be helping puppies choose an appropriate spot to eliminate. At twelve weeks old, most puppies should be capable of holding themselves overnight.

When a puppy is first brought home, take it outdoors to a selected spot and praise the puppy for sniffing there. Every time the puppy is taken outside, bring it to the same spot and praise profusely when it eliminates there. Do not play with the puppy outside until he goes to his spot and at least sniffs around. Also, keep the spot cleaned up. As the puppy gets older and its muscles develop, it will become more reliable and the free time can be gradually lengthened.

Typically, Lhasas do not go to the door and "ask" to go out, even after they are fully house-trained. This is very different from most breeds of dogs. Rather, in typical Lhasa fashion, they expect their owners to ask them if they need to go out, or to simply be let outside when they want, often enough to avoid "accidents."

Thanks Nancy.

There is only one point on here that I will differ with and this is only going on my own personal experiences with my three. All my three do tell me when they want to go out.

Honey will look at me and bark - its a different bark to the norm and I know the difference and then she will sort of 'half turn' her body which ends up with her looking at me out of the corner of her eye if you understand me and still give this strange bark. Lexi will sort of 'whine' long windedly and Bruce will actually go to the door of the room we are in at the time and 'double bark'. Honestly, they all do this and every time I have let them out, off they go directly to do toilets. IT proves how intelligent they can be.

Honey trained pretty quickly but I was vigilant in taking her out every half an hour or so to begin with and then lengthening the time. Lexi followed Honey and Bruce followed them both so it was easy for me to train.

I have to say that Ive been very lucky with them..............but who knows, the next one may be difficult! (notice I said the next one lol lol lol lol) .........shush lol lol lol xxxxx
