Having never been there I cannot answer yes or no but I believe it is vrey good for the bitch and that it has alot of stimulants and nutrients in it so because of this, then yes I would say yes I would but Im not sure the bitch needs to actually eat 'every' afterbirth (depending on the amounts of pups).........not sure xxxxx

Well, Im in no position to comment really, but I would imagine the mother bitch would know what to do and will do what comes naturally?
In a way, you could liken it to dogs eating faeces when they need certain nutrients they are lacking...their instinct obviously kicks in and they do what they need to do xx

I was there when coco delivered the afterbirth from her first pup. She ate it as it was coming out. you barely got a chance to see what it was and it was gone!

But say for example that Lexi had 5 pups, I wonder if she has to eat all 5 afterbirths or would just 2 or 3 be ok for her? xx

I would imagine only Lexi knows the answer to that Lia...I am sure once she is pregnant your vet will probably give you lots of advice and information on that sort of thing xx

i usually let them have 1 or 2 due to the fact it has lots of nutrients in it.and also helps to stimulate contractions or so i am lead to believe but pups feeding can also stimulate the contractions as i saw with Phoebe yesterday.
Jodies last litter i hardly got a chance to see the placenta let alone try and stop her eating it. I like to at least see them so that i know every afterbirth is out.
Many bitches will eat the placentas all of them but i often find that they have the runs after when they finally can tear themselves away from their new pups don't know if this is due to eating placentas. In the wild the mumeats the placentas so she gets all the goodness after the births but i have also heard that this is instinct to hide the smells of the babies against preditors.

Very interesting reading, thanks Pauline.

When I went to see the stud owner, she also said that she only lets her bitches eat a couple because it does give them the runs and that by eating, say 2, there is enough goodness for the bitch for what she needs. xxx
