Hi all, Im just off to bed now.....but before I go can I pick your brains?
As you know, I didnt have Diesel as a puppy, so this is all very new to me ...... what are your views on these questions?
How often should I bath Gucci? He is quite dirty already?
He keeps weeing up his tummy...baby wipes arent getting it clean...
Tear staining...not bothering me but is is best to keep that cleaned off? I wipe his eyes every day but should I pay more attention to the staining on the fur?
Should I correct Diesel for growling at him? Im thinking its OK as Diesel is asserting his Alpha male role? Is this right?
Gucci seems to want to eat 24/7...is 4 meals a day still OK?
Despite having a hundred thousand chew toys, he prefers my fingers and toes...how can I discourage this? He can spin his head 360 degrees to reach when Im holding him!
Quite a grumpy little boy when removed from Diesel's food bowl...lots of arms and legs and squeaky action...should I do anything to modify his tantrums?
I know this probably all sounds silly but I am a novice and would really appreicate your input.
Off to bed now, night night all and thanks in advance for any tips!!!!! :D

I bathed mine every couple of weeks. Sometimes had to do it more often if they'd gotten really dirty or covered in poo :( :( If it's the wee you're concerned about can you just wash his tum??
I would try to keep the tear staining under control. Bathe eyes at least daily (more often if needed) with cooled boiled salt water. Connie gets quite sore under her eyes if I let it build up. The skin goes quite raw looking. Bailey doesn't and never has been bothered with this.
Mine had 4 meals a day until they were 4 months old then it was cut to 3 meals a day until they were 6 months old. Since then they get 2 meals a day. They also get the treats here and there.
The biting is a puppy thing but you have to try stopping it as it's not so much fun when they get older and do it. Connie is 11 months old now and she tends to nip when you see her first thing in the morning. It's not viscious, she is just so excited to see you. She jumps up and bites at your hands or clothes. I tend to tell her off then ignore her. Make a fuss of her when she's settled down a bit. She is getting better though.
Hope this has helped. M xxx

Okay lets take this one step at a time or one point at a time...
When you say he is getting dirty,
do you mean garden dirt or his own dirt??
A white will look more dirty than say a gold or cream
All boys pee up their tummies.
You need to keep the hair on his pencil trimmed.
There is no harm with you putting him the sink and washing his belly.
You do not need to use shampoo every time.
As to much will dry his coat out
Some lhasa's tear more than others,
this can be due to the food that they are eating,
or the eye sockets themselves.
Some produce what I call eye boggies (Mucus) more than others.
Yes I would still wipe his eyes, maybe a couple of times a day,
to stop any residue build up.
You can put a smear of Vaseline down each side of the snout,
just below the eyes.
What this should do is act as a barrier.
Diesel growling depends on when and how it is happening,
as to what action to take.
Tell diesel he is a baby in a calm tone,
can help the situation, not all but some.
If he is growling when Gucci goes near his food,
then yes that is reprimand by tone of voice.
If he is growling when Gucci goes near him
then yes that is also a reprimand by tone of voice.
But in the same manner, you have to make a fuss of Diesel,
as Gucci has invaded his home.
Always ignore the pup and make a fuss of Diesel.
just so that he knows that everything is ok.
Lhasa's need reassurance the same as we do.!!!
What age is Gucci.
Four meals a day sounds fine for a puppy between 8 - 10 weeks.
After that you need to drop down to three times a day.
Then down to two and into what ever routine you normally have for Diesel.
Diesel will be seeing this little one, getting treated different to him.
So when Gucci is being feed, give diesel a treat or something,
or even take him out of the room, where Gucci is eating.
Make addition fuss of Diesel at this time.
When was Gucci last wormed??
Gucci playing with fingers and hands.
I use the word biting,
when ever they start to nibble your hands or fingers,
use the word biting, in a stronger tone.
I have found that they stop biting and lick.
They know it is wrong, even give a little squeal,
as if they are hurting you.
As this is what his sibblings would do.
In other words ouch that hurts.
Even though they love toys, nothing compares to that of the attention
of us humans, as lhasa are companions.
They want to be where you are, into what you are doing,
they do not like to be left out at all.
Regarding Gucci's tantrums, I would be inclined to pick him up more and more,
when he is doing that, so that he knows that you are the Alpha.
You will not tolerate his behaviour.
They soon learn believe you me.
I hope that this has helped in a small way.

Diesel just snapped at Gucci for attempting to steal his bone...I think he may have nipped him too cos Gucci was squealing. Stewart told Diesel off and sent him to bed...Diesel did so and within minutes came back into the kitchen and was giving Stewart big sorry kisses......He and Gucci are now at opposite ends of the lounge, facing away from each other like a little pair of bookends. I know its OK for him to growl at Gucci but this was a bit too much. Mind you, I hope Gucci has learned his lesson from it xxx

I tend to keep mine apart when they've got bones as we've had some 'bickering' and even if they have one each they always want the one that other other has. Now, Molly growls as a warning and if that's ignored she goes on to snarl and then if that's ignored she snaps. It doesn't reach this point very often though, a growl from her usually does the trick. She's never bitten. I don't tell her off if she growls or snaps because I don't want her to bypass those warning signals and go straight onto biting to warn people/other dogs.
Ebony doesn't seem to growl, she just snaps as a warning. She does catch the skin but there is never any sign of a nip or bite (ie broken skin), which sounds abit like what Diesel did. I don't tell her off, as again I think they've got to be able to tell a person or another dog if they don't like something they're doing and I'm worried that if I tell her off for snapping she'll resort to biting. In Diesels case he was telling Gucci that it was his bone and he wasn't going to steal it!
Others probably have different views, especially those who are more experienced in having more than one dog and I'd be really interested to know what others do! xxx

I'm pretty much the same. I let the two of them fight it out. They are never territorial about food or treats. I'll usually give them one each. Raven will steal wickets after he's half eaten it so he'll go and eat all of hers. I think it's only fair since she bullies him over most things that he gets more treats!
One thing wicket will growl at is toys (the video of wicket and his ball says it all). He never growls at anythign else. When he growls, he never snaps or attacks raven or anyone. I think it's his way of having fun! If he is threatened by another dog, before he snarls and snaps, he'll sneeze at them. As soon as I see him sneezing at Raven I just keep a careful eye to see what's going on. If it progresses to a snarl then I'll diffuse the situation by distracting them but I never tell wicket off unless it's uncalled for, but most of the time Raven deserves it. I think if you leave them to get on with it then they'll sort it out themselves. I only step in when they are getting too noisy or rowdy.

Thanks guys...the problem is Diesel is, and always has been, very food territorial. Its something we are all aware of and obviously Gucci isnt......
On the plus side, things are improving by the day between the two of them...Diesel seems much calmer in Gucci's company, and entices him to play along with him too. Oh, its so cute to watch!!
Gucci has a new top tooth breaking through today so he wants to gnaw at everyone's fingers...and then he is getting all stroppy when we wont let him!
He has mastered the art of getting up and down the back doorstep hee hee hee!!!

Hi guys, me again...
Does anyone have any clever ideas for how I can help Gucci with his teething traumas?xxx
kimpossible
12-07-08, 04:21 PM
i gave raven ice cubes to crunch on. She couldn't bite them, but she sucked them and (i hope) it soothed her gums. I also bought the nylabone teething key set things for her to chew on ... she still chewed the table leg though! she also had the kong teething stick (wasn't interested at all).
If he's chewing your hands, just yelp like a dog (i looked like such a spanner doing this with raven) and take your hand away. He'll realise if he bites you, you won't play with him. This worked for Raven but I'm not sure how most folk get them to stop biting.
P.S With the ice cubes, it's funny to see their wee faces when it melts and they can't find it anymore. They are so confused!!! It's so cute!

You know, all I gave mine were those hard rubber toys and they were ok with those to be honest xxxxx
I just gave mine toys to be honest ansd this was all they ever really needed... if they went to chew something they shouldnt I used to say a firm "no" followed by "toy" and then give them the toy so they knew what was theirs. If they tried chewing my fingers I would do the yelping thing lol lol.
Now I can say go and get your toy and off they go to get it.......Roxy ismuch better at this then Holly lol lol

Right, OK. Well to be honest Gucci has mostly furry teddy bears, cos thats all that Diesel will play with, so maybe I will pop out tomorrow and get him some rubber ones...Feel a bit of a wally now for not doing that sooner xx
And those chewy bones............Holly loved gnawing away at them.......still does.......
Just check on which size and dont get the ones with knots on the end as these can come off and choke them I was told.

Raven's breeder told me to buy Raven the rawhide rings for her but to make sure I buy large ones. That way they can't break anything off and they'll just sit and chew it (and it last ages!). The problem was that wicket stole it and ate it so she never got the chance!!!
Im glad you brought the 'hide' chews up Kim because when Honey was a pup, I was told (and quite a few times including the vet) that these hide chews ie the shoe shaped ones etc can swell up in their stomachs and can cause all sorts of problems and can be dangerous so from that day on, I never ever bought the again as I wouldnt want to take the chance.
Not trying to frighten anyone but I can only say what I have been told and as soon as the vet said exactly the same, I gave up buying them. xxxx

Oh. I bought Gucci a rope toy to chew on today and a plastic squeaker too. He hates the squeaker...so does Diesel...but they have been scrappy-dooing over the rope toy!!
Also bought some Pedigree puppy dental sticks as well, which Diesel has squirreled away from him!!!
kimpossible
13-07-08, 06:35 PM
be careful with the dental sticks with gucci. they can become quite chewy for a young pup. there might even be a reccommended age on them. I can't quite remember if it is them or dentarasks that are for older pups. check the age on the box just to be sure.

OK, back on the subject of Gucci's teeth...he really does seem to be having a hard time with them...one minute he is OK and then its like the pain starts and hes doing some comedy growling and frantically trying to chew on things, which I now have plenty of chewy things at the ready, but he wants to be picked up and comforted and then tries to sink his teeth into me...I do what you all said, and squeal and put him down, but then he goes for my feet...and then cries...and I feel awful so I pick him up again and we are back to square one. I have tried doing the Mummy Dog thing and placing him on his back and doing the eye contact thing but he cries and then gives in, and then it all starts again...
I feel so sorry for him but I cant have him biting at me and I cant just ignore him either.
Help!!!
