I'm going today to collect the pup of Wicket's that Chris's mum and dad are buying. His name at the minute is Ruben, but they haven't seen him yet so they don't know if he'll suit him or not. I am just hoping that when we go to see them that they are healthy and happy. I've made sure Chris's mum and dad have everything they need all ready to collect him.

I'll let you know how they get on. They've never had a puppy before so they might struggle. They want to keep it long coated too, so they really are jumping in at the deep end!

Good luck. Hope all goes well when you get the puppy. I'm sure they will do fine with your help.

Well, I didn't get any pictures today, but I'll see the pup every weekend almost so I'll be sure to take loads then. Ruben is home and is doing good. He needs to put on a wee bit of weight but he'll be fine. He's a big boy (at least double the size of raven at 8 weeks and bigger than wicket was too). He's got a curly coat is a right wee character! He's got about 3 teeth and knows how to use them

Just a wee quick question:

Is this normal?

I phoned the woman before we went to pick up the pups and she said that we had just to drive round and toot our horn and she would bring the pup out to the car. She didn't want us to go to her door. This meant that Mary (Chris's mum) didn't see the mum or the other pup. Is it normal for people to get their pup like this? It's just that when I got my 2 then the folk selling them had us in the house and explained everything I had to do. I had to tell Mary everything once we got home. Luckily she bought food for the dog because we didn't even get given some.

Kim I would not say it is normal. I don't like people coming to my house as people can bring with them dieases and this could be fatal to young puppies. If I meet people away from home I will take 1 or 2 dogs with me so that they can see the mom and another dog. My boys don't travel well so I normally don't take them with me.

I would never do a drop and run. I always make sure I explain things, answer question and give them time before I leave. I will follow up a few days just to make sure all is fine.

Not sure what is up with the people, but I would get the puppy to the vets just to make sure all is well. Better safe....

I personally think she's got something to hide. Very bad practice not giving some food away with you. Did she say what kind of food he eats at least??? Can really upset him changing his food suddenly. He has a lot of change today.....leaving his mum and brother and now in a strange environment. At least he'll be looked after. Does the other pup have a home yet? I hope he does.

He's going to the vet on Saturday to get his first jag so he'll get checked over there. I wormed him today because I don't think he's been wormed at all. It was just annoying because when we went to collect him, their son and his friends were just coming out the house so they couldn't have been worried about diseases.

Is saturday the earlyest they could get the puppy in? I'd be worried just by what you've said in the past. How is he walking?

Don't mean to worry you but if it were me I'd want him at the vets ASAP just to be safe.

But at least he has a good home now. Good food and love....

Sorry only just managed to catch up properly. First I hope the pup is going to settle in well and that chris's parents will ok with what they have to do being newbies if you like. Im sure with your help and advice they will be fine.

Secondly, the incident with the handing over of the pup is all too suss to me. Sorry to put dampners on this but this is not normal practise at all and although Lexi is my first bitch to breed with, I still have the nounce to know that this is definitely not the way. Had it been myself, I would have insisted on being invited into her home and I would have insisted on alot more too............the sad thing about all this is that we all fall in love with a pup and not the owners and would never want it to have a poor quality of life so our instincts say "got to take the pup away from here". Im not saying that this is what you thought by the way because arrangements were already made - just generalising. I would say this person definitely had something to hide without a doubt but, at least Ruben now has a safe and loving home - somewhere where he can be himself - a normal pup who has to adjust - and he will with all the love and attention he will receive. Happy Ending :P :P xxxxxxxxxxx

When I asked about food they said that he was on the tins of pedigree (I assumed puppy). He and his brother were only on 2 meals a day and were sharing a tin between them all day. When I saw the tin they should've been on a full tin each a day and split into 4 meals. Grrr ......

She has decided to keep the other pup. He has quite a big umbilical hernia so I don't know if she would've been able to sell him easily.

The vet said to give him til saturday til he settles in. They said that would be the earliest they reccommend. He is toddling around but his back end is a bit wobbly and there is something with his back legs that I can't quite put my finger on. It might just be that he's only been walking for a week so he's unsteady ... I hope that's what it is!

I did suggest that they leave the pup and wait til I breed raven and they could have one of her pups, but they didn't care what the pup was like. They just wanted it because it was one of Wicket's. Unfortunately, the pup seems to have inherited the bad structural points from both his parents (Wicket's tail set and Coco's VERY short rib cage) If it had worked out the other way the pups would've been wee crackers.

Also, is it common for lhasas to have curly coats? The pup looks as if he's going to be curly.

Mmmm dont know about the curly coat to be honest as none of mine ever had this so I only know what I know ;) Not much help here Im afraid - sorry. Also, if Ruben is a pet only and not for show, then any fault does'nt really matter (as long as its not medically life threatening) and Im sure he will give as much pleasure and love as much as he will receive in return. xx

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! This is very bad practice for a breeder!

My parents and I have been breeding Lhasa's for over 40 years and we have NEVER exchanged a puppy on a motoway service or outside the house.

We have always done the following:

1) At 5/6 weeks of age all puppies would be weaned from mom and enjoying 4 meals a day, and advertised for sale!

2) Any PPO (Potential Puppy Owners) come to the house and sit in the living room where the puppy pen is based and sit and talk about the puppies before seeing mom, and any other dogs we have.

3) The PPO then gets to see the pups out of the pen and play on the floor, sometimes this means splitting the sexes if they prefer to have a particular sex (ie bitch) and then this way they don't choose a boy and become disappointed. So they get to see the pups play with each other but above all they see which puppy 'wants' them, by coming to them.

4) Once a puppy is chosen (bear in mind I may make them a drink at this point if they are undecided and offer biscuits hehe), all puppies go back into the puppy pen and the paperwork comes out. I explain what the KC registration documents are, about insurance, about their 5 generation pedigree which I produce myself as well as a fact sheet that I produce myself which thanks them for buying a Parisaire puppy but also explains what the puppy eats and drinks and when, when to decrease meals and how much to give approximately (as all puppies are different), it also explains when they were last wormed and when they are due again, their vaccination dates (when had) and a little paragraphy about neautering - when the best time is to do it etc.

5) I then take a non-refundable deposit from the PPO to secure their chosen pup and I put the relevant paperwork away so that I don't mix it up with other available pups. I produce a valid receipt to explain what they've paid and for which pup and the date of pick up of the pup.

6) Finally I explain that upon picking the puppy up I expect them to bring a blanket and a carry box or travel cage as this is the safest method of transporting a puppy and I briefly explain of what foods to start getting in and what toys / bedding etc is best for their pup (this is normally if its their first ever dog or first one for a long time)

7) Once puppy is picked up at 9 weeks of age (1 week after having 1st injection) - this ensures that all pups are healthy from jab and no sickness and diareah (sp?) happens, and puppy is fit and healthy to go to new home. I explain to the new owners that I normally send out a newsletter from us at Parisaire twice a year to keep them updated on anything they need to know as well as any future or current puppies I have for sale (great way to advertise) as well as write a little paragraph from the puppies mom to the puppies asking how they are and if they are behaving etc - its a little silly but most of the owners so far have found my newsletters a laugh and really useful.

So there you have it - I may have missed something out - so I'll go and re-read it now and see if its all there.

Its quite lengthy but at least you get an idea from how an experienced breeder does it and it makes you remember buying the puppy a whole lot nicer experience than the way you have experienced recently.

I have to agree with the above here. When I got Holly and Roxy (different breeders) I was taken into the house to sit and watch the the pups etc. No choice involved with Holly as she was the last available bitch. Everything i'e papers, feeding , insurance etc was explained in detail and we ourselves were questioned too!
However I'm sure Ruben will be fine, as Lia has said he will now be loved whatever :D
Keep us all updated on his progress and look forward to seeing the pics :D

Oh on another note with regards to his walking he may have a fault with his hips but as long as he's not in pain it is just a minor problem and as long as he's not a show dog then it won't matter. He could also have what is known as 'cow hocks' which is when the hock (back leg knee joint) goes inwards when walks - again its a fault in the confirmation but not life threatening.

Curly coat? Hmmm, I have a Lhasa (Paris) who is wavy but it does blow dry straight when I bath her, otherwise there is a chance of cross breeding but if you have the paperwork then that shouldn't have happened.

kimpossible

Wicket has a straight coat but Coco's was slightly wavy but was kept quite short. This pup seems to have the start of proper curls. If I can get a photo, I'll post it.

     Yes Prapsos Paula .............

LIke the Lhasa Apsos but with a ‘smooth coat’, similar to the Tibetan Spaniel.

The coat around the head and their expressions appear like those of a Tibetan Spaniel puppy.

Then the smooth coat develops differently around the legs and feet. It is said that it is the phenomenon of a ‘smooth coated’ Lhasa Apso, called the ‘Prapso’......... an Apso with short hair if you like. Not sure at this point whether the coat becomes longer and curlier though - I may be wrong!

The temperament in Prapsos is apparently different as well - Prapsos are supposesd to be full of vigour cheekier.

It is said that this is due to genetic mutations and it was the Australians that first called them Prapsos.

This is about all I know and have read about these dogs a few times but maybe someone on here may know more about them than I do. xx
