Do any of you clip your own dogs hair to keep it short? If you do, what clippers do you use? I'm going to start cutting wicket's hair myself and I'm not sure what the best ones would be to buy.

Diesels groomer uses the professional clippers (not sure of actual brand name) and then curved scissors around his eyes, these are about £3 from your vets and they also work very well around their bottoms. I have a pair of professional scissors for trimming in between his little pads too...they are very dainty and pointy and reach the parts even Carlsberg cant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thought I would let you know a little bit about dog clippers.. :) As I have been through quite a few different makes in my years... not telling my age though. The first pair that I ever bought, were Oster's Golden A5 twin speed clippers. The were really good value for money as they lasted a long time. I have also used laube and andis. The best thing about these types is that the clipper blades can be used on one another. As oster blades fit moser's as well.
I have also had aesculap favorita II clippers as well. They are really good ones to use. The only thing that I find as with all blades, they do get blunt very quickly. So it is advisable to get a sharpening stone or kit and learn how to sharpen them yourself. Other wise it will cost you a small fortune to keep sending them away for sharpening. No only that, but when they come back, you need to re-adjust the tension yourself. So you might as well learn to sharpen them. There are a lot of pet clippers available, but all that I can say is that you get what you pay for. Pet clippers do not last very long. Hope that this has helped you with making a choice of clippers suitable for wicket... Maddie :D

thats true, id rather save up and buy a good pair of clippers if i were to use them regular (but as i dont so theres no rush) its the same for scissors, ive bought a cheap pair and they werent that good, so for xmas or birthdays guess what i get ...............blooming dog stuff or money to put towards stuff like scissors, trolleys, etc, whoop whoop
but thats what i want well along with a few bottles of boozy juice of course     xxx

My first pair of clippers were aesculap favorita II, made in Germany.
Purchased on line.

I still have these original clippers today,
as well as another three sets of them,
plus I have a set of Moser clippers as well.

I have changed blades to the titanuim ones,
as they do not get hot, and seem to last longer.

They are also slightly cheaper than the aesculap blades.

I tend to go between the moser and the aesculap,
but Simon prefers the moser.

I have used osters,
but found them to be quite heavy and noisey.

I have handled the croft pet ones,
but do not like the plastic combs.

I would not recommend the plastic combs for anyone,
as these do get easily caught up in the coats.

I have to agree with Maddie,
that you get what you pay for, great advice.

Just like the old days,
when your washing machine used to last for years,
the new ones are just not built to last.

If you can get hold of a good second hand pair,
they will last you well,
as long as you get them serviced regularly.

Thanks! I didn't even consider that they would need to be sharpened regularly! I was torn between the oster and andis. I've got an andis trimmer that I use for round Wick's bits and it's really comfortable to use so I might get a set of their clippers. I've never seen the aesculpa ones so I'll need to have a look at them first.

Thanks for all your advice!

Nancy, my vets can obtain curved scissors but I know for a fact they would cost £10 including VAT. How come you can get them so cheap? Oh and what size are they please. xx
