I've been advised to breed Raven next year (it'll probably about march time). I know I should have her eyes tested before I breed her, but I didn't think they could detect PRA til the dogs are 2 years so I'm wondering what would be the point? I know every single dog in her pedigree is PRA free as they were all show dogs or kept by a show breeder for producing show dogs and I can find all their results online. I was going to get her and wicket tested at SKC in august but I'm not sure about getting her done - I suppose it couldn't do any harm, could it?

i personally would never breed with a dog without it being eye tested clear, and ive chosen to personally not breed from any of my bitches until they are 2 years old, theyre only young once so i want them to enjoy it, and as a lhasa can live to 15 -18 years i think its like letting a kid have a kid, but this is just my personal choice xxx

Sorry KIm but Im with Pamela on this one love. Lexi is just over 2 years now. I would never have considered breeding her before this time - the other reason why I waited was to have her eyes tested even though I knew that on both Lexi's parentage, all lines were clear right the way through to as far back as possible. Also you have to remember that all Stud Dogs and Bitches should have up to date clear eye certificates with the exception of a Lhasa being over 7 years of age of course. Sorry but this is my view xx

I'll get her eyes tested at skc for definite then. I was filling in the form and i was thinking "is it really worth it?" but i didn't consider the point of view of the stud dog owner, whoever they may be. They don't know the pedigree and I really owe it to them to have her tested. I'll book her in with wick (although I'm only getting wick tested for noseyness sake - if he fails, the breeder might be judging obedience at skc and i'll make a scene at the side of her ring!!! I've not checked the obedience judges yet or even if obedience is on.)

I've been advised by Raven's breeder to breed her on her 2nd or 3rd season. I think her 2nd season is way too young, but if I breed her on her third (if she's 6 months regular) then the pups won't be born til after her 2nd birthday.

Thanks for your advice guys, I really appreciate it. I didn't think of the other folks pov.

erm please dinna think im telling you what to do, but if your a member or committee member etc of a lhasa breed club then you may naeed to check there rules and regulations, just to keep yourself right regarding age of a bitch for breeding etc, if your not then 2nd season (12months old) would be ok

the reason i say i wouldnt want to breed from a bitch under 2 yrs is because they say a dog ages 7 yrs roughly for every human year so a bitch under 2 years old would be like allowing a 12-14 year old child to have a child  :? sorry there is no way i would ever allow this, along with wanting my girls to enjoy there youth, and becuse i can also see how they turn out ie fully developed in body and coat, and to have a fair idea of how good they are in the ring, it also gives me time to study other dogs and research into finding a suitable stud
just my views and as i always say each to there own, :D xxx

Slightly off the subject...but with regards to all things hereditary,.....Diesel was the first in his line to have cherry eye...so I guess theres a first for everything (although Im sure the conditions he was kept in didnt help) but a point worth thinking about xxx

You might be right there. I was told by my groomer (so it might not actually be true) that any small faced dogs like lhasas and shih tzus can get cherry eye even if it isn't in their lines if they are in a very stressful situation. Her example was that it can happen if they are freaked out while grooming (filled me with confidence so it did). So that's maybe why diesel got it.
