Folks, I've got an emergency, and my vets is closed til tomorrow morning! I've just caught Raven eating a dirty sponge from the kitchen. She's only eaten about a mouthful of it, but it was dirty. What should I do? Is it poisonous? Should I induce vomiting? What if there were still some chemicals on the cloth? I'm panicking!
Help!!!
(Sorry if this should go in health!)
Edit: I should say it's one of those cellulose sponges you buy in the supermarket for washing the dishes. Also, she chewed it into wee bits.

Er...Im not sure on that one hun...at a guess I would say if anything like washing up liquids on there she will jsut get a bit of diarrhoea?? Not sure though hun...Im sure the actual sponge itself will be OK Diesel has eaten teddy bear stuffing before........let us know how she goes xx

What was it used for? if it were just for washing dishes (washing up liquid) thats 1 less worry mine have chewed sponges and been fine but it looked as if they had chewed most to little bits and i thought that they had eaten loads
If you are still worried is there an emergency vets number?
How are things? any symptoms that are worrying you at the present? apart from the obvious......
are you sure how much was eaten?

Washing up liquid can also make them vomit and i forgot to ask was the sponge wet or dry when she got it?

It was an old sponge and it was dried out and it was proper dirty. I think the last thing it was probably used for was probably wiping a mark on the floor or window or something because it's proper dirty. I just hope it hasn't had jif/cif cream on it last. She ate probably about a 50p piece size. She always eats in wee bites so I don't think it'll get stuck. She's not showing any signs of anything just now except she's annoyed that I took the remainder of the sponge away.
I feel terrible. My wee nephew who's only 2 was in earlier and he just puts everything everywhere and he must've knocked it onto the floor and I didn't notice. I'm usually so careful with stuff the dogs might eat.

i would keep a close eye on her and if she shows any signs of choking, dioreaha, spewing (i mean vomiting  ) difficulty breathing, becomes lathargic (floppy very tired looking) phone the vets, they must have an out of hours emergancy number, or try the next closest vets who do have out of hours service, i always keep the numbers in the drawer next to the phone, but most of all try not to panik, easy to say but hard to do, i know, we all love our pooches more than anything, but dogs are a lot tougher than we think, keep us up to date xxxxxx

I'm starting to calm down a bit. It's been an hour and a half since it happened. I took them out for a walk and raven was fine. She's not showing any signs of illness, but I'll be offline the rest of the night looking after her, just in case. She's being a wee bit clingy (as I type she's trying to climb up on my knee even though she's too wee) so I'll keep a close eye on her.
I'll let you know how she is in the morning.
Night x

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. After the sponge dried there isn't much harm it could do other than an upset stomach maybe. Don't you have an emergency after hours clinic you could call for such ememgencies? I'm sure the sponge would not hurt Raven but if your dog ever eats something they shouldn't you can induce vometing by a shot of peroxide. They vomit within minutes and most likely what they swallowed will come up.
Just like the little buggers to give you a heart attack. I've been there with my pooches. I'm sure he will be fine. Sorry you had a panic. I hate when that happens!!!

Well, Raven still seems herself this morning so I hope it hasn't harmed her in any way. The only unusual thing last night is that she woke me up in the middle of the night to let her out to do the toilet and she peed for britain! Hopefully the bits of sponge will pass through her and she'll be ok.
I tried phoning the emergency vet last night but the line was constantly engaged. (There is only one emergency vet for Wishaw, Carluke and Lanark because the one company own the vets).
Thank you all for your help. It helped me to calm down a bit. I was running around like a headless chicken when she did it trying to find out what to do. xx

What a relief she is OK. Its one of those things that catch us by surprise......maybe check with your vets during opening hours exactly where you can get help in an emergency hun, that may make you feel more at ease? Im really lucky Diesels groomer is like my on-hand advisor too!!! :D :D

I'm glad Raven is okay. The sponge will surely come out in her stool, don't worry.

I'm going to try to keep mine for saturday. I've got a bottle of white in the fridge that might not see the end of the night though!
Kim, Im really sorry that Ive only just seen this post - I feel awful now but I am really pleased that all is well now. Not going over old ground here but my three have pinched all sorts of cleaning cloths and sponges and strewn them all over the garden. This is a worry I know but my god Lexi is the worst out of the three of them and what I find in her mouth sometimes is nobody's business     xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

   This was the first time Raven's eaten something she shouldn't and after the roar I gave her when I caught her, I doubt she'll be doing it any time soon. She's only just starting to be interested in toys. When she was a pup she always ignored them and would rather chew the table leg :x but now that shes bigger she thinks everything is a toy!!!

    My 3 loved their toys but now it has died down a bit and they will play only when they feel like it but play more if I instigate it and Honey loves chasing ball - Lexi does not bother now with balls and Ive no idea why. Bruce will chase a ball but stops and just looks at it expecting to roll in the other direction all by itself but he never picks it up in his mouth :!: :!: Honey will pick it up and bring it back :P :P xxxxxxx
Glad to hear that everything was ok with Raven.
You have to be so careful with detergents, cloths, sponges etc.
It is not the cloths themselves that are dangerous,
but what they have on them.
Having a lhasa adult or puppy is like having a small child around,
you have to eyes in your backside.
Keep everything out of harms way.
Too true Kerry. When Im cleaning the bathrooms, I use alot of cleaning detergents and different cloths for different jobs that I keep in a carrying basket for easy transportation and low and behold, my three always grab some of the cloths so yes, I have to watch all the time and take them off them immediately!!xx
