Have any of your pooches suffered from any ear disorder and how did you deal with it? Also, who uses the fantastic Thornit? I use this as a preventative and my 3 have never suffered from ear problems - it also helps to loosen the roots of the hair to enable easy removal of the ear hair. Lia xxx

i use this aswell, but to be honest ive hardly touched the stuff, so far ive only used it two times on one of the dogs and everything cleared up, no more problems xx

i got stuff from canine chemist, its an ear cleaner with mild anti bac stuff in it, i use this to clean there ears every couple of weeks, but if something does flare up i use the thornit (it stinks hehehee, but works) and hae presto ear problem all gone, but theres only the once i have used it (same occasion, one dog, used it twice, problem cleared up) and theres been nothing since :D xx

Yes I use thornit too, hate the smell though and panic about getting it in my eyes, which usually means that I do end up getting it in my eyes! I'm always just about to put some in Ebonys ears, holding her ear open with one hand and the spoon with the thornit on the end in the other and then she jerks her head and the thornit goes all over! :o xxx

:D :D Brilliant stuff this is and also, if your pooches tend to nibble at their paws or thereabouts for a prolonged period, put thornit in a plastc food bag and dip the paw in, hold the bag tight and shake - paw and all - :lol: - and there you go - stops!!! xx

Well actually if you really want to know, I learned it all from Keris many moons ago ( the breeder I knew ages ago as I said in the other post). I did actually buy it from Keris as she makes it herself and she sells it cheaper. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

You can buy the ingredients from the chemist and make your own, which would work out lots cheaper. There's a thread on a general dog forum (don't know whether I can mention the name or not) that tells you what you need and what quantities and the method. I've thought of doing this when I run out. :) xxx

Theres about 500 pages to trawl through but I'll find it if it's the last thing I do! :lol: I thought it was only a few months ago that I'd seen it and thought that it would come in handy but it must be quite a lot longer than that. All the ingredients are supposed to be available in chemists, haven't tried to buy any yet though, so don't know how easy it will be. Athletes foot powder has also been mentioned as a good ear powder for dogs, as they have the same or similar ingredients, haven't checked this though, it's just something I read while looking for the thornit recipe! xxx

The best place to get stuff like that from is the internet. I found a great ebay shop that sells boric acid powder. I'll check if it sells the rest, and i'll post in on here.

Athletes foot powder has an active ingredient in it, usually miconazole or clotrimazole or econazole (spelling could be dodgy as I'm typing as chris talks) which are all anti-fungals. In short, no, athletes foot powder is not the same as thornit.

Right folks, I've been trolling the world of the internet and this is what i've found:

boric acid and zinc oxide powder can be bought from ebay (although you need to click the box "include shop inventory" to find the zinc oxide).

I assume that the idoform powder, is meant to be iodoform powder (maybe us and uk spellings?). Well, I can't find anywhere to buy it online, so if anyone comes across a site, please let me know. Iodoform is a antibacterial powder and there is a slight chance that you might be able to get it from your local chemist. Chris is off tomorrow, but on friday he will see if it is possible for him to order some and and how much it will cost (because it is a "special" substance so it might cost you a limb or two).

Thornit itself is readily available on ebay I got mine there and it arrived next day! Ebay is also very good for Lhasa books and other obscure things!! 8-)

I can't remember where I got mine from, I've had it ages and it's still got quite alot left in it. I know it was about £7.00ish a bottle. (a very tiny bottle! :P )
I suppose for people who get through alot it might work out cheaper to make your own although one of the ingredients may not be too easy to find! xxx

Petmeds.co.uk sell 20g for less than £5. I use that site quite a lot for logic toothpaste and stuff. It's much cheaper than getting things from your vet. Also, they usually have some discount codes on the go. A wee search on google and you can save yourself another 5 or 10%. The stuff generally arrives very quickly and I've never had any problems with them.
