View Full Version : Nervous Job of Clipping
I use the guillotine type clippers which I find the easiest and Im quite adept at it now but when I first tried, my hand shook non-stop and I literally just snipped a tiny bit off but now I do the job properly :D

I've got guillotine clippers I do them every week especially her dew claws at the back as they grow very curly I must admit i only cut a tiny bit off in case they bleed but i will get used to it, it's quite difficult with a black coat and black nail to find the flamin thing

Yes I agree on the black claws too. All my three have clear and black claws but luckily I can use the clear claws as a guideline for the black ones :P :P xxxxxx

My first clippers were guillotine-type once. Like you Lia, I found my hands shaking as I was struggling to get into position and squeeze that handle. Coco could sense my fear and struggled haha!
Then I bought myself the other type of clippers that are like mini garden shears/scissors. These ones were better for Coco than the guillotine ones, but she was still frightened.
Now I use the Dremel grinder on Coco's nails every weekend, just before I bathe her. It's great that Coco doesn't struggle at all when I use this, but it does forever for the length to go down. I use the clippers on her dew claws as the angle makes it difficult for me to use the Dremel.
I thought I'm doing a good job with the weekly nail grinding, yet whenever the groomer comes by, she can still do quite a few snips on each nail ???!!! :?

I don't know what type of clippers I use but they seem to be the regular kind found in pet shops and the like. Both of mine have all black claws and luckily I haven't had to clip the little ones yet but I hate clipping Benji's nails, he's nervous and that makes me nervous and I end up just taking a slither off but as he's out a lot they don't grow to much, it's the dew claws mostly.
I won't let anyone else cut their claws as Benji has come back with bleeding toenails twice in the past... poor baby :-(

You sound like you are doing everything right,
you do not need to clip the nails to far down,
especially if they are out on solid ground,
like concrete etc,
as this kind of surface,
wares them down anyway.
Sorry to hear that Benji has been through two tramatic experiences
when having his nails trimmed.
I feel though I must say, that when the quick is caught
a little blood does seem to go a long way.
I was surprised also that the person who clipped his nails did not use
an anticoagulant.
Keep to the routine that you have put in place,
and everything should be fine.
